The Stress-Disease Connection

Book Recommendation: When the Body Says No

by Dr. Gabor Maté

As science is slowly starting to understand there is more to health than just the physical body, Dr. Gabor Maté brings a clearer insight into the true nature of disease. In his book “When the Body Says NO, exploring the stress-disease connection,” Gabor Maté, M.D. opens our eyes to the interconnection between emotional trauma, stress and our physical health. Through personal stories from patients and scientific research, Dr. Maté awakens us to the fact that in order to heal our bodies we must first understand what they are trying to say. He tackles serious conditions like cancer, Alzheimer’s, ALS, IBS, multiple sclerosis, arthritis and auto-immune diseases.

Despite being written in 2003, it provides an understanding behind the mind-body connection that traditional views of medicine still overlook. While there is no miracle cure offered, Dr. Maté does give us a real place to start.

“A major contributor to the genesis of many diseases…is an overload of stress induced by unconscious beliefs. If we would heal, it is essential to begin the painfully incremental task of reversing the biology of belief we adopted very early in life. Whatever external treatment is administered, the healing agent lies within.”
